Still it was a reminder to keep an eye on where to put our feet and a warning that anyone who decides to visit Little Fell does so at their own risk. The walk can only be done at 'access weekends' when the flag is furled, as here. Mickle Fell proved to be a grand hill and was definitely worth the effort and I certainly hope to go there again in the future. Whilst Mickle Fell can be reached on access weekends via a choice of two permissive routes there is no such way to reach Little Fell or Roman Fell without taking some quite large detours away from the paths. Only two routes are officially allowed and the advice is to leave by the same route you entered the Range. For help logging on, see Help > FAQs > Logging On. There is IMO a better route up Mickle Fell than the official ones if you are so minded Starting from just east of Grains o' th' Beck follow the tracks first towards Fish Lake, and then west to Close House, before heading up to High Crag, onwards to the Trig Point, and round to the summit. By this point we’d only seen two other walkers who, as it turned out, also made the decision we made to walk the obvious ridge round to the south-west in order to visit Little Fell. Ironically the moorland ridge between Mickle Fell and Little Fell provided the easiest walking underfoot of the whole walk, following as we did a faint path. In addition to Cow Green Reservoir, the great gorge of High Cup is once again a highlight.
